Welcome Inn Hotel Division 2A
Moneen, Castlebar - 15th August 2004
Castlebar Celtic C team held on to second spot in Mayo Division 2A, after a comfortable 4-1 victory over local rivals Castlebar United in Moneen. Celtic were in control of the game from the very start and were 2-0 up after 10 minutes with two well taken goals from strikers Ian Burke and Jamie Carr.
Burke opened Celtic’s account with a sliding finish that found the roof of the net after a great delivery by Carr. Minutes later, Celtic were 2-0 up. Midfielder Kevin Boyle played a superb through-ball to Carr and he finished with a low drive.
United came more into the game after that but could not break down a strong Celtic defence which gave United little room to operate.
Celtic had to wait until the start of the second half before the got their goal which was scored by substitute Sean Walsh. After a terrible mix-up between the United keeper and center-back, Walsh had the simple task of tapping into an empty net.
The visitors were now rampant and should have at least doubled the score-line on created chances. Both Walsh and Brian McCarthy missed the target by inches.
Substitute Ger Mullaghy made it four with 10 minutes remaining. Jamie Carr was put through through one on one with a fine Padraig Moran through-ball, but his effort was well saved by the United keeper. However, Mullaghy was on hand to bury the rebound with a superb finish.
