Derby Delight For Killer Bees

05/09/2010

Castlebar Town 2-6 Castlebar Celtic B

The clubs U-16B side hit local rivals Castlebar Town for six in the 1st Rd of the Mayo Cup which was played last Saturday in Moneen. This victory was built on the excellent Hoops defence of goalkeeper Ronan Byrne, Garret Dunne, Cillian McNeela, Darragh Singh and Pat Ahern. The midfield sector where the battle was won the Celtic was well served in the engine room by the excellent quartet of Aaron Singh, Patrick Harkins, Keith Mulchrone and Mark Nolan but the stars of the show were the Celt’s outstanding striking duo of Gerry Hunt and Kevin Quinn who were unstoppable during the game and both claimed hat-ticks in this deserved victory. It was the away side who dominated the game from start to finish but were made to fight all the way by a hard working Town side. The home side found themselves 3-1 down at half-time thanks to two goals from Quinn and one from Hunt. The second half saw the introduction of Michael Hall, Chris McCormick, Sean Fallon and Shane Nugent and they all played their part in this impressive victory. Gerry Hunt and Kevin Quinn went on to complete their hat-tricks in the second half and the Tom Duffy and Michael Padden’s side will be looking for a home draw in the next Rd.

Disappointment But Future Is Bright

05/09/2010

The clubs U12C team which is made up of players from the clubs U-10 Academy meet K&K Utd B and Manulla B in the U-12 Mayo League Division 3 play-off games on Thursday and Saturday. The young Hoops ran out 5-1 winners over K&K Utd on Thursday evening but the score line does not reflect how close this game was. It was K&K Utd who dominated the first half and deservedly took a one goal lead in at the break. The second half saw a different Celtic side and once the outstanding Thierry Baba levelled the game with 10 minutes remaining it was the home side who the most likely to take all three points and that what transpired thanks to a brilliant Liam Whyte hat-trick and a great finish by Finn Sammon. The score line was very harsh on K&K but the home side just about deserved their victory. Next up was the challenge of Manulla B on Saturday afternoon and once again the young hoops found themselves a goal down when Manulla got a lucky break when their lively striker shot was deflected pass the excellent Ultan Reilly in the Celtic goals. Celtic came storming back and with superb goals from Thierry Baba and Conor Monaghan it gave the away side a merited advantage at half time. The second half saw Manulla coming storming out of the blocks and their big striker coolly levelled the game after 5 minutes of the restart. At stage it hard to pick a winner but the bigger and physically stronger Manulla side came more into the game and the hoops were finding it difficult to break down the home defence. The winning goal came with five minutes remaining and only for some heroic defending by the home team stopped Celtic getting a deserved equalizer. Manulla will now face K&K Utd knowing that a draw will win them the title but if K&K Utd win another play-off will be required. Managers Gabriel Downes, Joey Burke and Greg Whyte could not have asked more of their players over the two games and they know that this group of players will have their day in the sun. Celtic Squad: Ultan O Reilly, Shane Downes, Ruairi Nevin, Brian Walsh, Dara Ludden, Colin Hope, Cathal Coyne, Thierry Baba, Liam Whyte, Sean O Grady, Paddy Heneghan, Finn Sammon, Kevin Moran, Sean Kelly Fair, Conor Mongan, Dillon Felle, Ronan Dervan.

United Had No Answers To Brilliant Celt’s

04/09/2010

Castlebar Celtic 8-0 Westport Utd

The Gabriel Downes and Barry Redmond managed U-13 side destroyed Westport Utd in Celtic Park last Friday night in Section A of the Mayo League. The home side had the visitors pinned back right from the kick-off thanks mainly to the midfield dominance of the excellent midfield quartet of Evan Heneghan, Mark McDonnell, Sean Keaney and Colm Quinn and they were always in support of the unstoppable front two of Jason Hunt and goal machine Stephen McDermott. With Utd rarely troubling Paul Walsh’s goals thanks mainly to the superb back four of Kenny Downes, Anthony O’Boyle, Connor Murray and Fintan Borotto there was only going to be one winner of this one side contest. The Hoops had all three points rapped up at half time thanks to a hat-tick from Stephen McDermott, two from Jason Hunt and one from the impressive Sean Keaney. The second half saw the introduction of Peter Minogue, Eoin Togher, David McNicholas, Ciaran Padden, James Byrne and Karl Benson and they all played there part in this victory and shows the strength in dept available to the managers. Two further goals by David McNicholas added to the home side tally.

U-16 Girls Hold On To Top Spot

03/09/2010

Castlebar Celtic 2-2 Castlebar Town

The Jeremy Dee managed Girls’ U-16 side remain on top of the Mayo League after a well contested local derby ended all square. It was the visitors who got the best start when their excellent striker latched on to a long punt up field and coolly finished from inside the box. This goal seemed to spur on the home side and with the Celtic defence of Sarah Prendergast, Orla Barry, Aoife Carroll and Amy Robinson snuffing out the away side attacks this allowed the hard working midfield sector of Shauna Maloney, Ailish Moran, Lana McGlade, Chloe Finn and Nicole Redmond to support the excellent front two of Aileen Collins and Stacey Muldowney. The home side were on level terms following some superb play from Aoife Carroll and Shauna Maloney who set up Stacey Muldowney who drove the ball to the back of the Town net. The home side created a number of chances to take the lead but found themselves 2-1 going in at half time following another excellent finish by the away side’s striker. The second half saw the introduction of Aine Loughran and Shonna Connolly and both made big impacts in the game. It was the home team who were in control in the second half but Town always looked dangerous on the break. The Hoops levelled the game with 10 minutes remaining following good work from Sarah Prendergast who played in Nicole Redmond and she gave the Town keeper no chance. If this side can win their remaining two games they will be crowned Mayo League Champions but there is still a lot of football to be played before this can happen.

U-18’s Go Top Of Mayo League

02/09/2010

Castlebar Celtic 4-0 K&K Utd

The Paul Large managed U-18 side deservedly took all three points against a hard working K&K Utd in Celtic Park last Wednesday night and moved to the top of Mayo League Section A table. This victory was based on a solid defence of Goalkeeper Colin Ward, Keith Kilcourse, Jack Murray, Aaron Reilly and Tommy O’Reilly who never allowed the visitors a sniff of goal for the 90 minutes. The Celtic midfield quartet of Adam McGowan, Cian Costello, Martin Owens and Michael O’Gorman completed dominated their counterparts and superbly supported the hard working Jamie Fallon and Alan Quinn. It was the Hoops who started the brightest and were in front on ten minutes after a tremendous Martin Owens strike which rattled the roof of the Utd net. Another superb strike from his central midfield partner 15 minutes later gave the home side a deserved two nil lead. Substitute Patrick Kowalski made it 3-0 just before the break and ended the game as a contest. The introduction of Gary Concannon and Gary Ralph added extra bite to the home side and Jamie Fallon made it 4-0 midway through the second half.

Superb Hoops Deny Utd

31/08/2010

Castlebar Celtic 3-1 Westport Utd

The Celtic U-16 team kept slim hopes of winning the Premier League alive by defeating leaders Westport United at Celtic Park on Monday night. Westport needed just a point to pick up the title at Celtic Park, but Celtic were determined to put a stop to this. After a scrappy start, both teams found their feet in the game. The game sprang to life when Colm Nevin struck a free kick from 30 yards of the angle of the crossbar. Immediately after this, Westport went on an attack of their own, in which they earned a penalty which was coolly slotted away. The Celtic midfield were finding it difficult to play as a unit in the first half, although it is hard to criticise their performances individually. The score was one-nil at half time and it left a huge uphill battle for Celtic. It may have been more, too, only for some outstanding saves from Erik Eaton and some quality defending from the Celtic back four.

After another scrappy ten minutes at the start of the first half, Celtic went for an 'all or nothing' approach, playing a 3-4-3 formation. Jamie Ivers was withdrawn due to injury and was replaced by Mark McHugh, who was himself returning from injury. The back three of Steve Walsh, Mark McHugh and Donnchadh Barry did superbly well after the transition. With the extra man moved to midfield, Celtic started to dominate the play. The breakthrough finally came after 60 minute when a pinpoint pass from Jake Gannon sent Colm Nevin through on goal. The forward made no mistake slotting it home. From here, it always seemed as if it was Celtic's night. 10 minutes later, Lorcan King's stunning pass picked out Colm Nevin who rounded the 'keeper and finished into an empty net. Celtic then reverted to a 4-4-2 formation to protect their slim lead. Celtic fought hard to deter a wave of Westport attacks, with some fantastic defending from the back 4, and indeed the midfield 4. This, however, didn't stop Celtic from searching for the third goal, which they got courtesy of Rory Malone, who finished home from the edge of the box after Colm Nevin rounded the 'keeper again and set up the midfielder. Managers Mark Togher and Michael Kilcoyne were thrilled with the character and determination shown by their squad. Celtic: Erik Eaton; Jamie Ivers, Steve Walsh, Donnchadh Barry, Kevin Costello; Michael Lavelle(C), Adam Murphy, Jake Gannon; Kenneth McDermott, Colm Nevin, Lorcan King. Michael Padden, Rory Malone (King, 78), Keith Egan, Donal McGahon (Lavelle, 65), Mark McHugh (Ivers, 47), Paul Colleran (McDermott, 66)

Young Hoops Just Fail To Retain Duffy Cup

30/08/2010

The club entered two teams in the U-11 Duffy Cup last weekend and both had excellent tournaments. Celtic Aces were defending Champions and once again reached the final only to be denied by an exellent Derry City side. Celtic Aces emerged from their group undeafed and knocked out West Coast (Galway) in the Quarter Final and Salthill Devon in the Semi-Final. Derry City just proved just too strong on this occassion and were crowned worthy Champions. The Celtic Cubs who are all underage again next year were terrific all afternoon and did brilliantly to come out of their group but were defeated by the eventual winners Derry City. The club would like to thank managers John Coyne and Gaberial Downes for the work they put and also the the players who behaviour was exemplary. Celtic Aces: James Foy, Mark Kelly, Ben Murphy, Gavin Durkan, Aaron Naughton, Liam Whyte, Rory Nevin, Brian Walsh. Celtic Cubs: Ultan Reilly, Shane Downes, Cathal Coyne, Dylan Feile, Colin Hope, Paddy Henegahn, Sean O’Grady, Sean Kelly Friar, Finn Sammon, Darragh Ludden.

Celtic Topple League Leaders

28/08/2010

Castlebar Celtic 5-0 Iorras Ath

The Paul Large’s U-18 side just like their U-13 counterparts put five past League leaders Iorras Ath in Celtic Park on Saturday afternoon. It was the home side that dominated the early exchanges thanks to the impressive midfield quartet of Adam McGowan, Garry Ralph, Cian Costello and Michael O’Gorman and the excellent front two of Damien Togher and Alan Quinn. It took the hoops 20 minutes before they made the break through when Adam McGowan headed home a superb Michael O’Gorman cross. Celtic’s front two were now causing the visitors back four a lot of problems but lost Damien Togher after 30 minutes to a nasty shoulder injury and he was replaced by Jake Gibbons. The home side went in at the break 2-0 up when Michael O’Gorman coolly slotted to the back Iorras net from just inside the Iorras penalty area. The second half saw a different Iorras outfit but were finding it very difficult to break down the home defence of Keith Kilcourse, Aaron Reilly, Tommy O’Reilly and Captain Jack Murray and when they managed to get a shot on target goalkeeper Colm Ward was on top of his game. The introduction of Garry Concannon and Patrick Kowalski upped their team’s performance and further goals by Gibbons, Kowalski and a Cian Costello penalty rapped up all three points for the home side.

Five Star Performances From The League Leaders

28/08/2010

Iorras Ath 0-5 Castlebar Celtic

This bright Celtic team continued their 100% start to the league with another fine win away to the barony on Friday evening. It took Celtic 15 minutes to register the first goal when Steve McDermott rattled the net after good play from Jason Hunt. Despite several more attempts the score remained the same until halftime. Goalkeeper Paul Walsh, back four Kenny Downes, Anto O’Boyle, Connor Murray and Colm Quinn easily dealt with any efforts thrown at them while the engine room of Evan Heneghan Sean Keaney, Fintan Barotto and Jason Hunt opened up the Iorras rearguard allowing the impressive McDermott to continue his fine goal scoring form netting another 4 goals in the second half. This was his second five goal haul in four days. His strike partner James Byrne set up two for him. The introduction of Peter Minogue, Sam Hastings, Sean Tuffy, David McNicholas, Eoin Togher, Kieran Padden and Jake Twomey cemented Celtics dominance but the management team know they will meet stronger teams sooner or later.

U-13’s Maintain 100% League Record

26/08/2010

Manulla 1-9 Castlebar Celtic

Celtic’s U-13 side maintained their 100% League record after a one sided encounter with local rivals Manulla on Tuesday evening. The Hoops defence of goalkeeper Paul Walsh, Kenny Downes, Colm Quinn, Anthony O’Boyle and Conor Murray were rarely threatened during the 70 minutes. The midfield quartet of Jason Hunt, Sam Hastings, Fintan Borotto and the excellent Sean Keaney were always in control of this sector and supported the excellent strikers Kieran Padden and Man of the Match Stephen McDermott who hit the home side with five first half goals. The home side had no answers to the hoops in the first half and were 7-0 down at the break with Justin Hunt and Sean Keaney also on the score sheet. The second half saw the introduction of Mark McDonnell, Evan Heneghan, James Byrne, David McNicholas, Jake Twomey, Sean Tuffy and Eoin Tuffy and they all played their part in this impressive performance.
